my dog sassy is almost 12 years old and was just diagnosed with congestive heart failure. she refuses to eat her dog food "Ia ms" for small toy dogs. she is pecans and yorkie and weighs 15 pounds. ive been feeding her carrots, green peppers and cheese because they are good for a dog as well as a person and she will actually eat them. i don't know what else i can feed her that wont increase her chance of dieing from the heart failure, but will increase her health. she also has problems with her lungs and liver and has arthritis. also what kind of exersize should i be making sure she gets? is there something that will really help her and make her live through the heart failure longer? plz tell me everything u know i love sassy so much and i want to do everything i can to help her live longer, healthier, and happier.

Heart failure? NO Sodium(Salt)- drop the cheese because of sodium. !!!

Did they give her a diuretic?

You might ask the vet about limiting water intake.

(Fluid is retained because of inadequate heart pumping causing difficulty breathing, swelling and salt retention amongst other things)

Very Mild exercise - Panting is too fast

I don't mean to sound ugly...but being human with heart failure is bad enough. In dog years, Sassy is now 84 years old. I had to put my Emma down 17 months ago. I had her for 13 years...but she was so miserable. Tumors, cataracts, no teeth, arthritis, and heart was slowing. I knew the right thing was to let her go....it was my own selfishness that kept her alive for the last 6 months she was here.

Don't wait for Sassy to get to the point SHE can't hardly move and when she does she cries out in pain. I'll keep you and Sassy in my prayers!

You need to start to feed your dog like a baby. Made rice and chicken or rice and beef soup without salt then put in food processor to become like a soft food, add fish oil and feed her.

omg Im so sorry....rice and plain hamburger cooked is what the vet tells me to feed my dog when he's not feeling good cuz it's easy on their stomach. also apple slices...and green beans...and a tablespoon of plain canned pumpkin to help their digestive tract....Idk what else.....good luck with your sweet sassy :(
