Help. I'm scared about my carotid ultrasound results. Can someone please help me interpret.?

I got my result back from my coratid ultrasound. Can someone please help me interpret what it means and if I'm in any danger of a stroke?

Common Carotid Artery - Right Velocity 1.22 m/sec , Left Velocity 1.14 m/sec

Internal Carotid Artery - Right Velocity 0.75 m/sec , Left Velocity 0.96 m/sec

External Carotid Artery - Right Velocity 0.93 m/sec , Left Velocity 0.97 m/sec

ICA/CCA RATIO - Right Velocity 0.61 m/sec , Left Velocity 0.84 m/sec

Findings : There is no significant intimal wall thickening , plaque formation or stenosis. There is increased peak systolic velocity in the right common carotid artery , consistent with high resistance flow, tortuosity, artifact and/or mild stenosis. There is normal ante grade flow in the bilateral vertebral arteries.

CONCLUSION:
1. Increased peak systolic velocity, right common artery, consistent with high resistance flow, tortuosity, artifact and/or
mild stenosis.

2. No hemodynamically significant abnormalities were observed.

I am worried about the increased systolic velocity that was found. And I'm wondering how bad it is since I am not sure what the normal ranges are. It says no significant stenosis was found, yet it also says that stenosis could be causing the increase number.

Please if anyone out there is an ultrasound technician or can read my report to let me know if I should be worried or if my results fall under the normal range. I had this test done because of headaches and neck pain. Im 32 female, slim build.

Your results aren't normal, but they also don;t indicate a serious problem. In your case you can use the left side measurements as a rough baseline for comparison. The right side should be slightly lower than the left, which you can see for all values except the right common carotid.



Velocity increases where there is flow resistance from a partial obstruction or constriction - like the way water in a hose shoots out faster through a narrow nozzle. It looks like the ultrasound didn't show any visible narrowing, but some type of narrowing or source of increased flow resistance in the R common carotid artery can be inferred due to the increased velocity.



Its not a situation that necessarily needs any treatment, but this might depend on the cause of the higher velocity, which apparently might not be known at this time. Maybe the doc will need a closer look at the RCCA with different diagnostics or maybe the doc will recommend monitoring the artery to see if the situation is stable.



Without additional info, its hard to say if this finding is related to the headache problems, but your doc should have a pretty good if it is or isn't. I would guess (and it is literally a guess) that the RCCA poses no threat at this time.
